Creating My Dream Closet

I began my search with the obvious choice, a hunt on Pinterest for inspiration. I would most definitely have to have a walk in wardrobe. I think I've wanted a walk in wardrobe ever since I first saw The Princess Diaries (SHUT UP)

I love the look of rails. I'd have one set up similar to the photo below with just a few of my favourite clothing items or I'd swap it over to match with what season it is!

I like the idea of it being a room I could also get ready in. I'd probably put a small dressing table in there and my record player. In my dreams I'd have to convert half the room into an art studio and half a wardrobe. I'd love a little room just for all my art stuff where I could sit and draw all day.

Everything would have to look minimal, so lots of drawers to hide things (mess) in would be perfect. My favourite colours are black and grey so the room would fit with the theme of black and grey minimalism. I wouldn't put anything girly in the room kinda like the images I've included has done. Instead there would probably be a band flag rather than a Chanel frame haaaaa. But similar to the photos, there would be hundreds of succulents.
And if this is a dream closet I'd have a pet bed in there, for my dream doge.

Inspiration

This has inspired me to make the most of my wardrobe space I currently have. If  like me you're a bit of a clothing hoarder, the MakeSpace flowchart might help you become a bit more ruthless with what you should keep or give away! If you haven't heard of them before, MakeSpace is a storage company! Their blog has a lot of different articles on ways to keep organised.

Style Crush: Fearne Cotton

06:06

I've been such a huge Fearne Cotton fan ever since I hit my teens. I feel like her style is something I've followed for as long as I can remember. I just love it. The tomboy style with a hint of print and a bit of grunge just sums up what I love.

My Trip to Amsterdam

13:12

On the 14th September I went to Amsterdam for the week. We got the coach to Amsterdam, and I would NOT recommend it. It took 15 hours and it was just awful, but it was so worth it when we got there. It is such a surreal place. It doesn't have that busy city vibe like London or Paris but it certainly isn't lacking in character. We spent pretty much everyday walking around and exploring.

On the first full day I knew what I wanted to do, which was go to Monki. Anyone who knows me knows that this is my shop, I LOVE MONKI. And it didn't disappoint, I could have bought everything in there ahhhhhhh. I was actually very good and only let myself buy one thing. I'll be doing an outfit post soon! Also this is probably THE best place for vintage shops. When I go back I would set one day just for hunting through the vintage shops as there is so many, you could spend hours in there!

We then went to see one of my favourite bands, Basement. They were supporting Brand New at the Melkweg. I think I could watch Basement everyday they were incredible and worth a 15 hour journey to watch. Having not really been a fan of Brand New I was surprised at how much I liked their set, their stage presence is insane, soooo good. (Go listen to Basement you won't regret it )

If you're going to Amsterdam anytime soon I would say the best museum to check out is the Museum of Prostitution. It was the most interesting one we went too and wasn't that expensive! I was quite surprised ha ha. I'd have loved to have gone to the Van Gogh museum but we ran out of time booooo.

I would so recommend Amsterdam if you're looking for a good city break with a lot of walking around and exploring! I will definitely be going back one day. The people are so friendly and welcoming wherever you go in Amsterdam and its such a pretty place. I felt like I was in a Sims 3 town or something.

DIY - Shabby Chic Furniture

10:05

I decided recently that I wanted to redecorate my room. It was really outdated and just didn't suit me anymore, I'd out grown it shall we say. The walls were a garish pink and yellow, *shudders*. I was a bit of a hoarder as well and there was just clutter everywhere, I hated it.
So, in my University reading week (No I didn't read anything lol) I decided it was time to decorate!

I actually quite liked my furniture, I just hated the color of the pine! So after some research I decided to have a go at painting and distressing the furniture myself, and I'm actually really pleased with the results - so I thought I'd share them with you guys!

I started off by sanding down the surfaces with a fine sand paper, then removed all the knobs off of the drawers as I knew I wanted to keep them the original colour. Once sanded I applied two coats of an undercoat/primer paint, which was white.

Once the undercoat had dried I applied a white emulsion paint as the top coat, and I only applied one coat of this. Once this has dried I got my sand paper and started to distress. Sanding down small sections to reveal parts of the wood, like it had worn away over time. After you've distressed to your hearts content all you have left to do is apply a clear wood varnish and you're done!

Here is my dressing table before:|

and after...

Here is the rest of my furniture:

I'm so pleased with the results! And it was such a simple thing to do as well, and just really lights up the room.
For my wall colours I went for white and one statement wall in a gorgeous grey colour from Wilko's called "Flintstone". Grey, white, black and a hint of pink is all the colour I need in my room now!

I'll be doing another post this week about the accessories I've been buying for my room!

Pick The Right Degree For YOU

11:00

I started University in September 2014 at Nottingham Trent, after deciding to defer my place a year and do an Art Foundation. I had decided to do a History degree as I had always enjoyed History from a young age. I didn't do it at GCSE as my arty subjects were more my thing then (and still are). I picked Art, Drama, Media and Product Design over picking anything to do with Humanities. But, at A-Level I thought it was time to take my passion for History a little further and do it at A-Level. Truth is, I'm not naturally good at History. Everyone has that one area or subject they are just effortlessly good at, mine seems to be Art/Media/Fashion or performing.

My chosen career path is one involving the media industry whether it be TV presenting, research or working for some kind of fashion/lifestyle magazine. So in reality I probably don't need a specific degree to be doing TV Presenting but I felt that a History degree would grow my passion for History more and make me look like a person who is a good researcher and committed (History takes up a lot of your spare time, trust me)

My first day of uni consisted of people asking me if I was in the wrong room because they thought I was a fashion student. And this just stuck with me. Whenever I get asked what my degree is and I respond with "HISTORY", I just get blank looks and people telling me "Oh really? I'd never thought you'd do that! You look like a more creative person!" And this just bothers me because deep down I know Art/Media and Fashion is what I'm good at but I chose to ignore it as I thought this would be the better degree for my career. I'd been told by somebody in the media industry that doing a degree in either Broadcasting Journalism or TV/Film (Which I had planned on doing) was not taken seriously, and that a subject like History would stand out and is a "proper degree".So I thought, great! I love History. But in reality it's not what I expected. I should have just done a degree in something I really do have a passion for and that isn't a chore. History is a chore to me now, and that should not be the case when I am doing a degree in it(and spending a shit load of money on it). I should be excited to go to lectures and discover more about the world but I hate it. The only essay I have enjoyed writing so far has been a Media based one, about History in the film industry. I find myself sat in lectures trawling through fashion blogs, finding internships for MTV or drawing on my notebook instead of taking notes. I should be excited. I decided to write this blog post to tell people to ignore doing a degree they think "looks better" or is a "proper degree" or that someone wants them to do (i.e parents).

In my opinion, a degree is a degree. It shows you have spent 3/4 years of your life studying and working hard on a subject you love. People should just be able to pick whatever they want to do, whatever makes them happy. And this is something I wish I had done. It's constantly on my mind as to whether I should switch courses, and to be honest if I could right now I would, but then there's the voice in the back of my mind telling me to stick at it.This is also why I created this blog. I needed somewhere I could write about what interests me and write for enjoyment, not because I have to.

Sorry for the personal rant,

My Winter Essentials

08:16

I'm not a big fan of Winter, at all. I love the thought of winter, but when it actually comes around I hate it! I'm not a fan of constantly shivering, slipping over on ice and getting ear ache from the wind. So for you fellow winter loathers here is my list of winter essentials to cope in the frost!

Candles
I'm a big sucker for a festive scented candle in winter. Can't beat the cinnamon and apple scent mmmmm. Lighting up a few candles in the evening can really light up the room and give a warm feel, which I need as much warmth as possible!

The Coat
One of the only things I do enjoy about the cold months is choosing my winter coat! I sometimes feel that a coat can ruin an outfit, so it takes me ages to find the perfect one. This year I've gone with the Camel Cocoon Coat from Missguided. I AM IN LOVE. I got this in the Black Friday sales which seems to have suddenly become a thing in the UK (not complaining!) and is one of my favourite purchases this year. I literally feel like a giant warm teddy bear. It's oversized shape is really flattering and looks great with my favourite scarf at the moment too(see below for more on that!)
The coat is still available online here: http://www.missguided.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/125606/s/lena-cocoon-sleeve-coat-camel/

The Scarf
As seen in the photo above, another great investment I've made this month is this amaaaaazing tartan scarf from Primark for only £5! It's actually wide enough to wear as a dress if you so wished, or use as a picnic blanket lolz. It's literally THE warmest scarf ever and keeps that bitter wind at bay.

The Shoes
My favourite winter shoes are also my favourite summer shoes. The weather here in summer means you can wear trainers in summer. I bought these Vans Sk8-hi's in summer time and they have barely come off my feet since and I'm so glad I can wear them through to winter. They're soooooo warm and also have enough room spare for two pairs of socks haha. I lurrrrrve them. I bought these off Depop for £25 which is such a bargain. (If you have depop I have a ton of stuff for sale on mine, search "frunkkkawaii")

What are your winter essentials?
Keep warm, speak soon!
